Research interests

  • The application of preventing strategies in music education and instrument didactics
  • Motor control, playing-related musculoskeletal problems and their association to various psychological factors
  • Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dystonia in musicians and athletes
  • Measurement of neural responses under various auditory stimulations (e.g. binaural beats)
  • The physiological problems of musicians (mainly students) and their prevention
  • Music as a medium for the reconciliation of communities in conflict

Current projects

  • Development of a psycho-physio-diagnostic tool focusing on the musculoskeletal problems of music students
  • The psychological aspects of playing-related pain
  • The effect of various interventions on the treatment of playing-related pain
  • Dystonia in musicians: An ultrasound muscular investigation of the long-term effect of Botulinum toxin
  • The association between motor and psychological aspects in musicians suffering from focal dystonia
  • Developing and currently promoting an epidemiological online research on  “Health issues related to music studies” 

 Recently completed project: Dystonia in musicians and golfers: a comparative investigation into neuro-psychological trigger factors and treatments. This investigation was a joint project (collaboration) with the Sports University Cologne (Prof. Dr. Markus Raab, PD. Dr. Babett Lobinger) and was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Biography

In 2010 I received an MA (bachelor & master [honours]) in music education and performance (viola) at the Charles University (Faculty of Education) in Prague. My final research thesis focused on “Music as a medium for the rapprochement of the two communities in Cyprus”. At the same time I also completed my six-year performance studies (viola) at the Prague Conservatory [honours]. My final thesis focused on “The physiological problems of musicians and their prevention”.

Therefore I received an MSc in Music, Mind and Brain at the Goldsmiths, University of London (Department of Psychology) in UK. My final research thesis focused on “Neural responses stimulated by binaural beats: Differences between musicians and non-musicians - use of electroencephalography (EEG)”. Finally I obtained a PhD in neuroscience at the Center for Systems Neuroscience Hanover (ZSN) in December 2015. My doctoral dissertation focused on the “Neuropsychological Triggering Factors in Musicians with Focal Dystonia”. Since January 2015 I hold a postdoctoral position at the Institute of Music Physiology and Musicians’ Medicine at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media.

  • Second prize awarded by Charles University, Prague - Faculty of Education for the highest academic results in the academic year 2008-2009
  • Scholarship by A.G. Leventis Foundation for the academic years 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014
  • SEMPRE Attendance Bursaries for the highest mean ratings from the ICMPC12 review panel (2012)
  • 1995 - 2003 Member of the Cyprus National Wrestling Team in several international tournaments/competitions. Four times national champion (74Kg), two international medals and participation in the 'World Championships Children’s Competition in Poland ‘98'
